Glycolic acid is derived from sugarcane. It has the smallest and lightest molecular weight among all acids, which makes it easier to penetrate deep into the skin and provide maximum benefits. Glycolic acid is odourless, colourless, and highly soluble in water.
It is added to treatments designed for oily or acne-prone skin, dry skin, dull complexions, sun-damaged skin, and mature skin. Glycolic acid was once used only on oily or acne-prone skin. Nowadays, it's recommended by dermatologists for all skin types, depending on the formula. It regulates seborrhoea on young or oily skin, and moisturises and brightens mature or dry skin, depending on the amount of glycolic acid in each treatment (between 2 and 15%). However, be warned that it can sometimes irritate sensitive skin.

Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) gently exfoliate dead skin cells, hydrate deeply by attracting water (humectant), strengthen the skin's moisture barrier, and offer antioxidant protection, making skin smoother, brighter, plumper, and more radiant without the irritation of stronger acids like AHAs, ideal for sensitive skin and improving fine lines, texture, and pigmentation.

Key Benefits of PHAs:

  • Gentle Exfoliation: Dissolves bonds between dead skin cells for smoother texture, revealing brighter skin.
  • Deep Hydration: Acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the skin and locking it in, preventing dryness.
  • Strengthens Barrier: Enhances the skin's natural protective barrier, increasing resilience.
  • Anti-Aging: Reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and signs of photoaging (sun damage).
  • Antioxidant Power: Fights free radical damage from UV and pollution, protecting collagen.
  • Improves Tone & Texture: Helps fade dark spots and uneven pigmentation, leading to a more luminous look.
  • Enhances Other Ingredients: Facilitates the penetration and efficacy of other active skincare ingredients.

Why PHAs are Different:

  • Larger Molecule

Their large molecular size means they don't penetrate as deeply as AHAs or BHAs, working primarily on the skin's surface for less irritation.

  • Sensitive Skin Friendly

Perfect for sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin, or post-procedure skin, as they don't typically cause redness or sensitivity.

  • Non-Photosensitizing

Unlike some AHAs, PHAs don't make your skin significantly more sensitive to the sun.
